BIG thank you to everyone that voted for their favorite cabin kitchen design! The decision has been made and Classic Pine Chalet is the WINNER!!
Don't be sad if you voted for Rustic Woods, because you may see some designs from that board in the final revel. I cannot wait to show your the final design live, we are hoping before summer starts but we will see how the project timeline progresses.
So last week I tried my shot at live video on Instagram and insta stories- epic fail to begin with! Here I am thinking that I have this whole technology thing under control and then I try something new on instagram and my youth is gone- just like that!
Well, I eventually got over it and googled how to do it because google knows everything. Ba- Bam!! I was live and I don't even think anyone took me seriously because of the first attempt..LOL. Anyhow, since I kinda know what I am doing now my goal is to do more insta stories- YAY!!
As promised last week, I wanted to dive into more detail on why I selected some of the finishes I did for the cabin boards. I get questions all the time, like...
"Is that in? or is it out? I never know what trends to follow."
"What color cabinets should I do? White seems trendy, but is it here to stay?"
"Does my flooring need to match my cabinets?"
"How do you feel about Subway tile?"
"What about mosaics?"
"Is granite better than quartz, or marble?"
I generally tell all of my clients to follow their gut. The reason why I say this is because, if you love something you will make it work. If you love it that much, it will work in your home no matter what the "trends" are.
Flooring doesn't need to match the cabinets. In my personal opinion, when it matches it just looks like one blob of color. There is no distinction between cabinets and floor unless you put down a rug to break it up. Try a lighter cabinet with darker floors, or vice versa for a nice contrast.
I LOVE subway tile and I am not afraid to shout it from the mountain top! It is timeless, classic and will withstand any trends that come and go. It is the most versatile kitchen back splash that we now see everywhere- Laundry, mudrooms, bathrooms, accent walls, you name it and it is present.
Mosaics are great, when you find the right one! Really busy, with lots of color will look just like it sounds on your wall. My favorite go-to mosaics are natural stones, like marble or limestone, one to two color waves and either a stacked stone or flat or polished look.
AND The million dollar question! Granite & marble are natural stone and quartz is man- made. If you like the look of natural variance in stone (not matched) then granite and marble should be your go to's. If you like the look of granite & marble, but you don't want the maintenance of keeping up on sealing and cleaning, then quartz is your answer.
I tend to specific Cambria Quartz quite a bit on my projects. I really like the look of their engineered stones and the looks that resemble marble and granite are pretty spot on. Quartz is definitely a favorite of mine, until something else sparks my interest:)
So the reason why I choose subway tile for the cabin kitchen is a no- brainier, I love it! I have also chosen to do a dark grout(not black, but charcoal or dark gray) because I really like the rustic vibe and contrast that is gives off. Not to mention the cleaning maintenance will be ideal.
I am going with white cabinets because I love the crisp look of a white shaker. It is timeless, light and airy for any application, whether its a traditional kitchen, modern, farmhouse, rustic or cabin. It fits the style bill for all the above!
Quartz is my pick for the counter tops because of maintenance and various style options to choose from. I love the durability and natural marble looks. Granite is a close second because it tends to look a tad more rustic than marble looks- it will be a game time decision I can promise you that!
Flooring is still TBD at this point. Why is flooring so hard you guys??? Probably because its always the first thing I notice when I walk into a home. Just this past weekend my husband and I discussed the possibility of doing polished concrete instead of laying laminate or any hardwood. I need to do a tad more research on it, but I actually really like the idea. Anyone with two sense on polished concrete floors, please give me your feedback!!
I am leaving you with a picture of sweet Charlie, because this is how I'd like to remember him today! This boy cried the ENTIRE time I was writing this post. Lets hope Charlie is in better spirits next week:)
Happy Designing!!
