Oh Baby!

That's right, a new addition to the Grech Family will arrive in April!!!

As we are getting settled back into the house, one of the guest rooms is now in preparation of becoming a nursery. We have chosen not to find out the sex... so bring on the design challenge. All surprises over here!!

The words, "Gender Neutral", have been on my mind constantly the last few months. I cringed at the fact that everything needed to be brown, green and white. All white is beautiful, but lets be honest- babies throw up and poop. There really are so many options these days and really fun colors to play around with.

My personal style is definitely more, "minimal/traditionalist".  It's a very clean and non-cluttered look, while still incorporating traditional lines and furniture pieces. I wanted to design a space that our child can grow with. I happen to love yellow, so it was a given that it would be used. I mixed in light cream, off white, mint, and gold into my gender neutral palette.  All of which is completely suitable for a little boy or girl.

Here is what I came up with:

With the help of retailers like RH Baby, Pottery Barn Kids, & Land of Nod, I was able to create and achieve the look that I envisioned. I also sourced a few pieces through Etsy, and we opted to paint and old dresser for a more custom approach.

So what challenges did I encounter?

1: Planning.
In the early planning stages, I bought many small items and then returned them because my design ideas were all over the place. Maybe hormones played a part as well:)
I finally sat down and created a design board. My design boards save me and always keep me on track!

2: The glider.
I was dead set on this comfortable chair that could potentially be used elsewhere in the house at a later date. I found so many gliders had exposed bases with that horrible metal ring,.. No! and No. The other issue was that these chairs are HUGE!! Plan on blocking off an entire corner or section of the room dedicated to a glider.  I finally decided on the, "RH Baby Wing Back Glider". It was love at first sight, and it only took me 4 months to figure it out. It has a concealed base, it's comfortable, it's functional, and it's only 34" deep instead of 40". Land of Nod also has the, "Milo Glider", which was a close second.

The room is underway and I am very pleased with the look so far. What is even more exciting is that we get to meet this cutie pie in the next few months!!

I also promised more progress pics, so here are the finished photos for the kitchen and master bath:

We have been quite busy this month and its only going to get crazier around this household! Looking forward to the rest of the year and stay tuned for finished nursery pics.

Happy Designing!
